b

breath / dust

p

the subway trains are breathing

ppppppon the back of my neck

and no one notices

p

I have been huddled on the

pppppphurricane deck of your heart

but you won’t let me stay

p

you are out there,

ppppppbrown shirt wet

like your eyes in July on my porch

ppppppthe last time I saw you

p

do you need me to take you into

ppppppthe shower in your old apartment?

the one that screams with the steam

ppppppwhen the water gets too hot

p

rising up the walls,

ppppppmaking you warm again

p

pppppp*

p

consider the thinness

ppppppof a cat’s ear

p

there is a certain safeness

ppppppto clutching a stone

p

do you miss him

ppppppwith your January heart?

p

the moon will pick you up

ppppppand maybe even dust you off

p

and in my dream,

ppppppmy head said to me:

p

I’m always thinking about you on train platforms

or on train platforms thinking about you.

p

p

I.

p

yesterday I bought the world’s

toughest lavender plant

p

or at least that’s what the woman

at the farm stand said

p

I wasn’t going to take it

but then she said it had been

outside all winter

p

I wonder if she misses the plants

after they’re gone

p

II.

p

a girl is sitting on the edge of the sidewalk

strumming and singing

with an upturned hat at her feet

p

you belong in the cracks of the pavement,

she sings

p

and everything I have ever felt

rushes into my mid section

and settles like a stone

p

III.

p

I love how skin sticks to leather furniture

it makes me feel like something is needy for my body

p

kale makes the pan so angry

it spits oil at me

p

you used to warn me every time

stand back, lex

but I like to feel the hot flecks sting my bare arms
