Ash

I dwell

in a monstrous house

constructed by my words.

It traps me,

worries my reason

between its teeth,

then retreats.

I am left

with the itch

to burn

walls down,

to draw ash

from the bones

of my captor

to rearrange and distill

until I am left

alone.

Night Puppets

Trees glow orange

under flickering streetlights.

Branches cast shadows

like clawed fingers hovering

over the sidewalk,

pulling the strings of the passerby,

invisible marionettes.
