SHIMMERING RED

I am eating at the Matador Room

on Miami Beach

there are large framed posters of bullfighters along the walls

my uncle killed a woman in Spain

a translated news article told me the story

it says that he

appeared before the court as the “bastard grandson of William II of Prussia, last emperor

of Germany”

he is the most handsome of the three brothers

he killed a young woman

twenty years old

at the school where he was teaching

he said

“Hice un leve gesto con la muñeca, como quien aparta una mosca de la frente”

it means, I think

“I did a slight gesture to the doll with my wrist, like

gently swatting a fly away from the face”

he was a brilliant boy

he wrote an opus and played it with a broken arm

he flicked a blade and stabbed her, and then two others

who lived

a few years ago they released him and he moved back to America

to Chicago

where he attended university a long time ago

one year for Christmas we mailed him a Steinway grand piano
